The JPG format is a raster format and offers both lossless compression and compression which reduces the quality of your image. The Joint Photographic Experts Group popularly known as JPEG is a format that was created to display photographs. This format is generally used in websites to display realistic art or photos. When relating the quality of pictures to their file size, JPEGs mostly have a very high quality, if not the highest quality! Using this particular format, there is the loss of data each time you get to save the image because it is known to use lossy compression, thereby losing some visual quality in the process. The remedy here is to edit the picture or photo with a lossless compression system and ensure that the final image is saved as a JPEG. You shouldn’t also resize the image as the compression will be very noticeable.Digital photos are part of the files on a computer and are either stored on the computer’s hard disk or the memory of the camera. These digital photos are a collection of bytes and bits while the file format (JPEG, PNG, etc) are descriptions of how these bytes and bits are arranged.
When you use standard file formats, it enables devices like the digital camera to save files which you can later retrieve and process on another devise say a computer.
The JPEG is a format that allows digital photos to be stored in a compressed form, thereby allowing space for more storage and also increases speedy file transmission online as well as having a fast performance when these photos are viewed. Initially, the JPEG file was intended for file compression as well as storing high quality photographs. Portable Network Graphics, also known as the PNG, is comparatively new when juxtaposed with the JPEG. It’s a new format and most browsers now recently support this format which wasn’t so some few years back. The PNG is a better image when compared with lesser formats like the GIF. This format (PNG) doesn’t use much space and has unique qualities such as the Alpha Transparency Channels.
The JPEG file format can display as much as 16.7 million colors. This is one quality that makes them the perfect choice when displaying photos. When the JPEG format is being saved, the level of compression is defined. The rate at which the photo is compressed is directly proportional to the size of the file. The more compressed the photo is, the lesser the quality. When a JPEG file is reduced, there is loss of image information because of the lossy compression the format uses.
The JPG Format
The PNG format came in to limelight in 1996 to as a kind of substitute for the jpeg and GIF formats. It’s a very versatile format, supporting the 8-bit colors, the 24-bit colors and even the 48-bit colors. Although the PNG can be compressed like the JPEG, its kind of compression is non-lossy. The kind of browsers that supports these formats is another issue of contention as the JPEG supports old browsers like the old internet explorers whereas the PNG doesn’t.
Both formats have their advantages and disadvantages. It all depends on what exactly you tend to achieve. If you cannot decide you just can use a PNG to JPG converter to convert between the two formats.
